The School Year is Around the Corner

People often wonder what happens in a school during the summer. I often have people ask me, 'What do you do in the summer?' or 'I bet it is boring in the summer!'

Not many people understand that the summer is a time for reflection and a time to rejuvenate and refresh ourselves for the upcoming school year.

Today was a day when I am reminded why I got into the education field. I had one of my best friends come to the school to show his daughter around. I made sure that I would be around because she is going into 6th grade and it is a new school and atmosphere for her. She brought with her two precocious friends (one was 5th grade and the other was 2nd and I am graduated with their mother who is a friend of mine).

My friend's daughter had lost her mother and grandfather in the last two years and she is the true definition of resiliency. Both her and my friend epitomize the word.

I had a blast being able to show the three young girls around and to explain to my friend how Andrew Lewis had been transformed since the mid 1980s (my friend and I went there as middle school students and became friends there). The expressions and questions that the girls had were priceless and the sheer excitement that they had made me excited for the new school year.

We ended the hour long tour in the office where the young girls were fascinated with our new camera security system which caused them to do dances in front of it so we all could see them.

My friend was appreciative that I showed them around but actually I probably enjoyed it more than they all did because it reminded me of why we do what we do and why summer is so important in education. I was able to get those young girls excited for school and they in turn help me rejuvenate myself for the upcoming school year!

This was a fun day as we have another school year around the corner!
